  • Understanding and Mastering Stress

    These days people are very aware of the need to 'manage stress’; however we often use the word in many different ways. Some people will talk about having had a "stressy" day, when they are tired or overworked. People generally are aware of the benefits of learning relaxation, meditation and yoga etc, but do they understand what stress is?

    Stress is what happens when demand exceeds the resources we have available to meet that demand. Another way of thinking about this is that stress is how our brain and body responds to any perceived threat to our wellbeing. I have heard it very aptly described as "fear spread thinly".


    It is important to understand that stress is a physiological response to perceived threat. This may not be conscious to start with however, you may not notice the response building, but your unconscious mind is noticing that slow moving traffic and calculating that you are going to be late for that important meeting, and maybe lose respect or influence. Its response to this is to release adrenaline and give you what we call the fight or flight response. So our muscles become tense we start to feel hot, frustrated etc.


    Everybody's stress is different. Situations that cause one person to feel threatened won't affect someone else at all; think of public speaking for example. Some find the prospect terrifying; others really enjoy the whole experience. Some people are stressed by financial matters but sometimes in completely different ways. One person may be stressed by the prospect of opening their bank statement, another by the prospect of not having opened it! Stress is very individual and one of the keys to effectively combating stress is knowing precisely what causes you stress as an individual, and how you react to stress. Armed with this knowledge you can think about what will be the best way for you to manage your stress response.


    I have over twenty years experience of working in this area, and my approach to stress management is informed by experiences within the NHS, my many years teaching meditation and relaxation, and my studies in Hypnotherapy and NLP.
